But you’re not hyper!

Dear Gmaudie,

You’re right, I’m definitely not a hyperactive person, and that’s why when my Dr. first said “I think you’re struggling with ADHD” I laughed at him! I said “My mom disciplined me as a child and I was homeschooled, I can’t have ADHD. Dr. Dobson said so!” Or something along those lines.. haha! BUT apparently there are more than one kind of ADHD/ADD. There are:

1. Hyperactive

  • fidget and squirm or have trouble staying seated at all
  • move around constantly, often running or climbing inappropriately
  • have difficulty with quiet, sedentary activities
  • talk excessively
  • blurt out answers before questions are completed
  • speak tactlessly or inappropriately
  • exhibit difficulty waiting
  • interrupt or intrude on others

2. Inattentive

  • being easily distracted from a task, lesson, or conversation
  • difficulty keeping the mind on any one thing
  • getting bored with a task before it’s completed
  • skipping over details
  • making careless mistakes
  • difficulty listening when directly addressed
  • difficulty following instructions or finishing tasks
  • disorganization and forgetfulness

3. A combination of the two.

So, I’m not really hyperactive, but I’m definitely inattentive type. I think the reason I never knew before is that I was homeschooled, so I didn’t have the issues that other kids have in school when they’re little kids – it wasn’t a problem until I got to college and realized I couldn’t handle the classroom setting, and now I’m at a desk job it’s really hard to control, so I thought maybe a stimulant would help me with all my symptoms!

#Day 3 of  Concerta

I’ve had a splitting headache and nauseous for the last 4 days, but that happened even on the one day that I didn’t take the Concerta – yesterday. So, I’m not sure if the meds are making me sick, or if it’s something else. :P But I can definitely tell a difference when I’m on the meds – I feel more clear and focused, and like it’s not as hard to finish a project. My desk is already a lot cleaner and less cluttered.
